Jacobs jumps out to 2-0 at Northern Ontario playdowns

Olympic gold medallist Brad Jacobs scored a pair of wins to open the Northern Ontario Travelers Championship Wednesday in North Bay.

Jacobs, from Sault Ste. Marie, defeated Tanner Horgan 8-4 and Patrick Gelinas 8-6 to kick off the final week of playdowns on the road to the Tim Hortons Brier.

Team Jacobs, the 2013 Brier champions, are tied atop of the standings at 2-0 with Mike Assad, of Geraldton, and Sudbury’s Jordan Chandler. Assad beat Robbie Gordon 9-6 and Dylan Johnston 8-7 while Chandler topped Johnston 10-4 and Gordon 6-4.

Gelinas earned a 7-2 win over Colin Koivula to hold a 1-1 record. Koivula edged Horgan 5-4 to also sit at 1-1.

Round robin action resumes Thursday at 2 p.m. ET with the top three teams advancing to the playoffs and the winner representing Northern Ontario at the Brier next month in Ottawa.

Winnipeg’s Mike McEwen started the Manitoba Viterra Championship with an 8-4 victory over Justin Reynolds during Draw 1 action Wednesday in Selkirk.

McEwen, a six-time Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling event winner, has finished runner-up in five of the past six provincials as he looks to represent Manitoba for the first time in his career at the Brier.

Defending champion Reid Caruthers and his West St. Paul-based team rolled out to a 12-1 rout over Shaun Parsons.

Other notable winners on Day 1 include recently crowned Canadian junior champ Matt Dunstone of Winnipeg, who scored an 8-4 win versus Lorne Hamblin and William Lyburn, who beat Troy Hamilton 8-5 in an all-Winnipeg rink match.

The Manitoba Viterra Championship continues Thursday at 8:30 a.m. CT.


Calgary’s Kevin Koe scored a four-ender in the sixth to wrap up an 8-2 victory over Brent Bawel on the opening day of the Alberta Boston Pizza Cup Wednesday in Camrose.

Koe, the defending champion, moves onto the semifinals of the A bracket and will face Edmonton’s Mick Lizmore, who defeated Greg Pasichnuk 8-3.

The other semi sees Calgary’s Charley Thomas face Edmonton’s Brendan Bottcher. Thomas topped Kevin Yablonski 7-2 on the strength of steals in three consecutive ends while Bottcher scored a four-ender in the fourth end during a 9-2 win over Tom Sallows.

The Alberta Boston Pizza Cup continues Thursday at 9 a.m. MT.


Five-time provincial champion Jim Cotter of Vernon opened the BC CDI Men’s Championship with a pair of wins Wednesday in Nelson.

Cotter defeated Will House 6-3 and Chase Martyn 9-2 to reach the A-side semifinals of the triple knockout preliminary round.

Team Cotter next plays Glen Jackson’s Victoria-based rink after they beat Jeff Richard 6-5 and Tom Buchy 4-2.
