Jacobs slides into Northern Ontario final

Brad Jacobs is off to the final of the Northern Ontario Travelers men's championship (Anil Mungal).

Brad Jacobs defeated Dylan Johnston 6-3 Saturday to cap the Northern Ontario Travelers men’s championship round-robin undefeated at 7-0 in Kenora, Ont.

Jacobs, the 2014 Sochi Olympics gold medallist, now holds a berth in the final and a shot to represent Northern Ontario at the Tim Hortons Brier in Calgary.

Jacobs opened with the hammer, blanked the first, and earned a deuce in the second end. Johnston got on the board with a point in four and Jacobs added a second pair in five to go up 4-1.

Johnston was held to singles in seven and nine, sandwiching another Jacobs’s score of two in the eighth.

The Sault Ste. Marie-based team of Jacobs, third Ryan Fry, second E.J. Harnden and lead Ryan Harnden captured the Brier and earned silver at the world championship in 2013.

Johnston (6-1) meets two-time world champ Al Hackner (5-2) in the Northern Ontario semifinal at 7:30 p.m. ET.
