Murdoch eliminates Stoughton at Canadian Open

YORKTON, Sask. — Scotland’s David Murdoch slid past Winnipeg’s Jeff Stoughton 8-3 in six ends during a must-win C bracket game during Draw 10 action Friday morning at the Canadian Open.

Trailing 2-1 after the second end, Murdoch pulled ahead with a deuce in the third and stole two in four to add to his lead. Murdoch limited Stoughton to a single in five and iced the game with a three-ender in the sixth.

Charlottetown’s Adam Casey also held off elimination with a 7-3 victory over Switzerland’s Sven Michel. Casey scored three in the fourth to grab a 4-2 lead and sealed the win with a deuce in six followed by a steal of one in seven.

In the women’s division, Nina Roth, from Blaine, Minn., earned two in the fifth, stole one in six and took three in the seventh for a 10-6 victory over Allison Flaxey, of Listowel, Ont.

Sherry Middaugh, from Coldwater, Ont., scored a deuce in seven to win 7-5 over Regina’s Chantelle Eberle.
