Prince Edward Island and Northern Ontario both cancelled their women’s curling championships on Wednesday because of COVID-19 concerns, quashing the traditional qualifiers for the national championship.

Prince Edward Island says it will invite the team leading on the Canadian Team Ranking System as of Boxing Day — which was Suzanne Birt’s — to represent the province at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, scheduled for Jan. 28-Feb. 6 in Thunder Bay, Ont. If at least 50 per cent of Birt’s team is not available, Curl PEI says it will invite the next highest-ranked team.

Northern Ontario cancelled both its women’s and men’s championships next week.

The Northern Ontario Curling Association says it has not decided how it will pick its women’s team for the national championship.
