BERN, Switzerland — Four-time gold medallist Fabian Cancellara will skip the time trial at the road cycling world championships this month.

The Switzerland cycling federation says Cancellara will focus totally on the road race, which he has never won.

Cancellara won the time trial four times spanning 2006-10. He also has three bronze medals, including twice behind Tony Martin of Germany.

Martin will seek a fourth straight world title and rainbow jersey this month to tie the Swiss racer’s career record.

Cancellara took road race silver at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but has never won a worlds medal in the event.

The road worlds are from Sept. 21-28 in Ponferrada, Spain.
