BORJA, Spain — Alberto Contador took control of the Spanish Vuelta after former leader Nairo Quintana crashed and lost valuable time during Tuesday’s 10th stage won by Tony Martin.
Quintana lost control during the time trial on a downhill curve, hitting a guard rail, and going head-over-heels onto the ground.
The Colombian managed to get back on his bike and finished the stage over three minutes behind Contador.
Martin, the three-time world time trial champion, cruised through the 36.7-kilometre (22.8-mile) course starting inside the grounds of the monastery of Santa Maria de Veruela and finishing in the town of Borja in eastern Spain in 47 minutes, two seconds.
