Canada had an unexpected absence in its starting lineup Thursday.
Midfielder Stephen Eustaquio, who wore the captain's armband for the country's first two games, was on the bench to begin Wednesday's match against Switzerland.
Eustaquio did enter the game in the second half of a 2-1 loss.
Striker Jonathan David served as captain in Eustaquio's absence.
Eustaquio missed training on Sunday, though no reason was given.
Canada was already thin in the midfield after losing Ismael Kone with a broken leg in Thursday's 6-0 victory over Qatar.
Nathan Saliba, who entered that match as a replacement for Kone, took his spot at midfield against Switzerland.
Mathieu Choiniere started alongside Saliba in the midfield, while Alphonso Davies was available but did not play.
