There is a rare changing of the guards on the Western Mustangs sidelines.
Former quarterback Michael Faulds is set to take over as head coach of Western's football team, the school announced Monday.
Faulds replaces the legendary Greg Marshall, who served as coach for 18 years before announcing his retirement in December.
Faulds will become just the eighth coach in the 100-year history of the program.
"Michael is a highly respected head coach and an exceptional leader within U Sports," Christine Stapleton, director of sports and recreation, said in a statement.
"During the recruitment process he demonstrated the vision required to ensure Western student-athletes excel on and off the field while continuing the championship-calibre play synonymous with the Mustangs."
Faulds spent the past 13 seasons with Laurier, where he posted back-to-back undefeated regular seasons in 2024 and 2025.
He served as the Mustangs' QB from 2005 to 2009, leading the team to two Yates Cups.
"My family and I are excited to come back to London where we have so much family support and many friends. My wife Stacey and I met at Western back in 2006, so to come back 20 years later is significant and special," said Faulds.
"I'm excited to get started and continue building the momentum of this incredible football program."
Over 18 years, Marshall led the Mustangs to nine Yates Cup titles and two Vanier Cup wins.
The school said he will aid Faulds' transition to the role.
