The Montreal Alouettes could have safety Etienne Boulay back in the lineup soon.
Boulay has been released by the NFL’s New York Jets, where he was attempting to make the team as a cornerback. He became expendable when the Jets needed a roster spot after signing defensive end Vernon Gholston, their 2008 first-round draft pick.
Boulay signed with the Jets in the off-season shortly after working out with the NFL team. Before returning to Montreal, Boulay has 48 hours to clear waivers south of the border.
Boulay was drafted in the second round of the ’06 CFL Canadian college draft by Montreal and was the East Division’s top rookie that season. He cracked the Alouettes’ lineup as their starting free safety last year.
In other moves, the New York Jets signed the No. 6 overall pick Vernon Gholston to a multi-year deal Friday, in time for the defensive end-linebacker to be on the field with his teammates for the start of practice on the second day of training camp.
Gholston’s agent, Ben Dogra of CAA Football, told The Associated Press that the contract is worth US$50 million, with $21 million guaranteed over five years.
"Vernon is in the building," coach Eric Mangini said. "He signed, he’ll practice, so that process — which was long — is through and now he can move forward and we can get him on the field and really start the intense teaching."
