TORONTO — Toronto Argonauts defensive tackle Adriano Belli has been suspended for the team’s CFL season-opener because of incidents that occurred last season.
The CFL announced Monday that it was suspending Belli for one game for "a pattern of inappropriate behaviour that culminated with Belli’s pre-game confrontation with members of a visiting team on Nov. 7, 2009."
Angry with some of the Montreal Alouettes over incidents earlier in the season, Belli entered the club’s locker-room at Rogers Centre prior to the game and confronted some members of the team.
Belli was also fined earlier in the season for other transgressions.
The CFL said the decision to suspend Belli was made late last season and had been shared with him and the Argos but wasn’t "communicated publicly at the time out of respect for the CFL playoffs and Grey Cup."
The Argos open the season July 1 in Calgary.
