MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — The Toronto Argonauts and newly acquired quarterback Kerry Joseph agreed to a contract extension through the 2009 season Wednesday.
Joseph was the CFL’s outstanding player in 2007 when he threw for 4,002 yards and 24 touchdowns while leading the Saskatchewan Roughriders to a Grey Cup championship.
The Argos acquired Joseph and a third-round draft pick last month from Saskatchewan for defensive end Ron Fleming, offensive lineman Glenn January and a pair of draft picks.
"I am excited about this extension and thankful to the Argonauts organization which has gone above and beyond to get this deal done at a fast pace," said Joseph.
Financial details weren’t immediately available, but money was a factor in Joseph being traded to Toronto. Joseph was scheduled to make $250,000 this year but was looking to be paid on par with other CFL starters, many of whom make between $300,000 and $350,000.
Joseph took a whopping $125,000 paycut last year to help Saskatchewan meet the CFL’s $4.05-million salary cap. But he had expressed an interest in trying to recoup some of that money.
The Argos were 11-7 last season and finished first in the East before losing to Winnipeg in the Eastern final.
