Argos add former Eskimo Maas to coaching staff

The Toronto Argonauts have added another former Edmonton Eskimos quarterback to their organization in the hopes of improving offensive output in 2012.

The Argos announced Tuesday the hiring of Jason Maas as the team’s new receivers coach, reuniting him with new Argos pivot Rick Ray.

“I am truly excited to begin my coaching career with the Toronto Argonauts,” Maas said in a press release.

“It allows me to once again work with (new Argos head coach) Scott Milanovich who is not only a great person but one of the best offensive coaches I have had a chance to work with. I hope my experiences of playing and dealing with players will help enhance the overall production of the Toronto Argonauts Football Club. The move also brings me closer to Indiana where my family resides.”

Maas will be no stranger to several key parts of the Argos organization. The 36-year-old was the Eskimos’ starting QB when Ray began his CFL career in 2002 and was a major influence on the recent Argos acquisition. Maas also worked with coach Milanovich during a brief stint with the Alouettes.

“I was fortunate to have the opportunity to coach Jason in Montreal in 2007,” Milanovich said.

“It became immediately apparent to me that he had tremendous future as a coach. His leadership qualities are off the charts. He understands football, is extremely competitive and has a love for the game that will be felt by everyone in our organization.”

Maas played 11 seasons in the Canadian Football League, nine of which were with the Eskimos. Maas won two Grey Cups with Edmonton in 2003 and 2005. His best season in the CFL was 2004 where he became just the second Eskimos quarterback to pass for over 5,000 yards in a season. Maas holds the CFL record for most consecutive pass completions in a game with 22.
