Ticats’ Knowlton gets weekly award

TORONTO — Hamilton linebacker Markeith Knowlton, a big difference in the Tiger-Cats’ win against Edmonton, has earned CFL defensive player of the week honours.

Knowlton recorded 11 tackles, one interception, one pass knockdown and one fumble recovery to help the Ticats beat the Eskimos 28-21.

Montreal Alouettes defensive tackle Jermaine McElveen was a finalist for the award.

Knowlton is the second consecutive Ticat linebacker to win the award after Jamall Johnson won last week.

Winnipeg running back Fred Reid was named offensive player of the week after rushing for 167 yards and two touchdowns in the Blue Bombers’ 31-23 loss to Calgary.

Montreal quarterback Anthony Calvillo was also considered.

Winnipeg defensive tackle Doug Brown was named top Canadian for his role in limiting the Stampeders to eight second-half points. Brown had seven tackles, including two sacks.

Saskatchewan Roughriders wide receiver Rob Bagg was runner up.

B.C. kicker Sean Whyte won special teams honours for connecting on four field goal attempts in the Lions’ win against the Riders. Whyte hit field goals from 44, 43, 33 and 19 yards, and added three converts to contribute 15 points to the victory.

Edmonton running back and kick returner Arkee Whitlock and Lions wide receiver Ryan Grice-Mullen were also nominated for the award.
