EDMONTON — The Edmonton Eskimos claimed import kicker Justin Medlock off waivers Thursday from the Toronto Argonauts.

The move came two days after the Eskimos traded kicker Noel Prefontaine to Toronto for defensive lineman Etienne Legare and the negotiation rights to defensive back Damaso Munoz.

Medlock was named the Argos’ outstanding special teams player in his rookie season last year. The American hit 40-of-46 field goal attempts and connected on all 22 converts.

Edmonton general manager Eric Tillman said while the Eskimos’ staff has “complete confidence” in current kicker Derek Schiavone, the addition of Medlock makes the team stronger.

“Justin Medlock gives us great flexibility and depth for the balance of this season and in 2011,” Tillman said in a release.

“We’ve added two good young players in Etienne Legare and Damaso Munoz, bolstered our roster with Medlock and gained significant cap flexibility for next year.”

Medlock spent some time on the rosters of the Washington Redskins and Detroit Lions earlier this year before returning to the Argos on Sept. 12.
