CFL fines Redblacks DL J.R. Tavai for hit on Lions QB Travis Lulay

TORONTO — The CFL fined defensive lineman J.R. Tavai of the Ottawa Redblacks on Wednesday for a vicious hit he delivered on B.C. Lions quarterback Travis Lulay.

The six-foot-two, 269-pound Tavai used his helmet to hit Lulay on the chin in the first half of B.C.’s 26-14 win on Friday night. Lulay was knocked out of the game, replaced by Jonathon Jennings.

The CFL also fined defensive back Brandon Smith of the Calgary Stampeders for leading with his helmet in delivering a high hit on Edmonton quarterback Mike Reilly during the Eskimos’ 48-82 win Saturday.

Calgary offensive lineman Randy Richards also was fined for using profanity directly into a television camera.

As per league policy, the amounts of the fines were not disclosed.
