The Calgary Stampeders signed a pair of receivers Monday, as head coach and general manager John Hufnagel announced the team came to terms with non-import Michael Squires and import Markee White.
Squires earned all-Canadian honours for Acadia in 2011 and led the conference in touchdowns with seven to go with 432 yards on 31 catches. In 2010, the 6-foot-4 native of Halifax, N.S., had eight catches for 141 yards and one touchdown in eight games for Acadia. He transferred to Acadia from Waterloo prior to the 2010 season after the Warriors football program was suspended from CIS competition. Squires also played two seasons at Mount Allison.
White, who played with the Arizona Rattlers in the Arena Football League last year, started his pro career with the St. Louis Rams of the NFL in 2007. He also spent time with the Spokane Shock in the arena league and the Hartford Colonials of the United Football League. The 6-foot-7 Texas State alumnus began his collegiate career at San Diego State as a basketball player.
Due to team policy the terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
The Stampeders also announced several community initiatives scheduled for this week.
Newly signed defensive back Keon Raymond along with teammates Rob Cote, Anthony Parker and Corey Mace will be donating blood at Canadian Blood Services as part of the Partners for Life program on Wednesday. And the entire Stampeders team will be in attendance for a St. Patrick’s Day breakfast Saturday to raise money and donations for the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank.
