Argos release Davis; Als cut McMahon

The Toronto Argonauts have released import running back Troy Davis, whom they signed three weeks ago to their practice roster, Sportsnet.ca has learned.

A source told Sportsnet it was the team’s decision to cut Davis, who didn’t play any games for the Argos. Davis was cut by Edmonton in the winter after a season and a half with the team. He had 1,060 yards with the Eskimos last year. The 32-year-old had 6,715 rushing yards in six Canadian Football League seasons. He was also one of the best blocking backs in the league.

Davis’ release coincides with the Argos’ imminent signing of 39-year-old running back Sean Millington, who hasn’t played in a season and a half. As of late Wednesday, the Argos still hadn’t signed Millington. He was doing some light jogging with the team in practice.

The Argos also deleted Canadian offensive lineman Fabio Filice, who was picked up as a free agent on July 31. He had played two seasons with Hamilton.

In other league transactions, the Tiger-Cats have placed versatile Canadian offensive lineman Peter Dyakowski on the injured list to Nov. 26. Dyakowski sustained a knee injury in the Ticats’ past game. By putting him on the injured list for the remainder of the year and the playoffs, it will not count against the salary cap.

The Montreal Alouettes have cut quarterback Mike McMahon, whom they picked up from the Argos for future considerations on Sept. 9. McMahon was a bust in parts of two games with Toronto. He didn’t play a down for the Als.
