CFL official demoted for incorrect call

The CFL has demoted an official who made an incorrect call that led to an ejection of Calgary Stampeders linebacker JoJuan Armour.

Henry Chiu, a side judge on Jake Ireland’s crew, claimed to have seen Armour push over an umpire during a game two weeks ago. The league reviewed the incident the following day and determined the crew had been wrong to eject Armour for abuse of an official.

Chiu was scheduled to work this Thursday’s game between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Winnipeg Blue Bombers, but when the crew announcements were made his name was not on the list.

According to the Globe and Mail, CFL director of officiating Tom Higgins would not confirm Chiu was the official at the centre of the Armour incident. But he did say Chiu is one of seven CFL officials who will be designated to the amateur ranks by Labour Day, reducing the league’s officiating staff to 35 from 42 for the second half of the season.
