MISSISSAUGA, Ont. _ Ricky Santos’s stay with the Toronto Argonauts was a short one.
The veteran quarterback was among 15 players released by the CFL club Wednesday. Santos signed with Toronto on Saturday shortly after being let go by the Montreal Alouettes.
Santos signed as an undrafted free agent with the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs in 2008 but was released shortly afterward. He joined the Alouettes later that year and remained in Montreal until he was traded to Winnipeg on Sept. 21, 2009.
Santos was released by Winnipeg on May 17, 2010 and returned to Montreal just over a month later.
With the release of Santos and rookie Zach Collaros being placed on the nine-game injured list to start the season, youngster Trevor Harris won the battle for the No. 3 spot behind veterans Ricky Ray and Jarious Jackson.
Harris enjoyed a solid pre-season with Toronto, completing 13 of 15 passes for 160 yards and two TDs in rallying the Argos past Montreal 25-20 on Tuesday. Last week, he was 7 of 10 passing for 84 yards and a TD in the club’s 29-24 exhibition victory over Hamilton.
Also released by the Argos were linebacker Anthony Cannon, receiver Samie Parker and cornerback Sean Smalls. Cannon and Small started for Toronto last season while Parker was a 2004 fourth-round selection of the Kansas City Chiefs and spent six seasons in the NFL with five different teams.
Toronto will open the 2012 season in Edmonton on June 30.
