Chiu the fat: Big surprises in the CFL

Alouettes @ Eskimos | MON 34, EDM 21; Box

It was nice to see Brandon Whitaker involved in the football game. He had 25 touches for 179 yards and 3 TDs. When the Als are balanced, they are a tough team to beat.

It was the exact opposite for the Eskimos. Kavis Reed stated before the game that they needed to run the ball at least 20 times to be successful. That didn’t happen. It was simply inexcusable for the Eskimos to start this game so flat.

It really seemed like they were just going through the motions. Even after the injury to Calvillo, the Eskimos couldn’t gain any sort of momentum.

Credit has to go the Als for not making any excuses about injuries. They went on the road and beat the best team in the West.

B.C. @ Saskatchewan | BC 42, SAS 5; Box

Wow!!!

I did not expect this outcome.

The Lions are the hottest team in the league right now. They went into a hostile environment and took care of business.

Once again, the Lions D did not allow a TD. They are playing solid, team defence.

Travis Lulay and the B.C. offenve are really starting to gel. The receivers are all contributing by taking short passes and turning them into big plays.

The Riders simply made too many mistakes. They had costly turnovers, bad snaps, and countless bad penalties (16 penalties for 145 yards) which gave them poor field position. The Riders have yet to beat a western division team this season.

The Lions have now taken the season series over the Riders. The thought of B.C. being in the Grey Cup at home is looking like a real possibility right now.

Winnipeg @ Toronto | TOR 25, WIN 24; Box

My thoughts prior to this game were that Winnipeg would win this game easily. The Bombers had a great opportunity to keep a two-game lead in the Eastern division with a win.

Now with another injury to Buck Pierce and both running backs potentially being sidelined for the year, the Bombers could be in serious trouble. Credit has to be given to Toronto; they really played hard throughout the game.

This was a game that had the team with the best record playing the team with the worst record. This game was decided on the last play. A missed field goal by Toronto, and the Bombers couldn’t get the ball out of their own end zone, therefore giving up the point and losing the game.

Why didn’t the returner kick it back out?

Calgary @ Hamilton (Moncton) | HAM 55, CGY 36; Box

What a great showcase for the CFL in the Maritimes.

The Stamps started this game with a 95-yard TD drive. The Ticats did a great job responding throughout this game.

Marcus Thigpen had a field day catching passes all over the Stamps defence, and returning a missed field goal for a TD. There were huge plays made by both teams. Romby Bryant has to get some credit for his three TDs also.

In the end, it came down to turnovers. The Ticats protected the ball and forced the Stamps to play catch-up for most of the game.

It was a great to see both teams wear their “home” uniforms as opposed to one team wearing white. Hopefully we will see a team out East in the very near future.
