Running back Clifton Dawson will be hoping to sign with a National Football League team before commiting to the Canadian Football League, specifically the Toronto Argonauts who own his playing rights.

Dawson, who dressed for 11 games last year as a rookie with the Indianapolis Colts and had 30 carries for 64 yards and two catches for 15 yards, is looking for work after the Colts cut him on Friday.

“We are pursuing what opportunities are available with NFL teams for now,” his agent Kristin Kuliga told Sportsnet.ca. “The final cuts to the 53 man is today and first game is next week, so it may be a few weeks, but you never know.”

She added she and Dawson will “probably play it by ear” and see how much interest there is for him in the NFL before considering the CFL.

“It’s tough to say how long as NFL teams pick up players through even the end of the season as well as for futures contracts at the end of the season for following season,” she added..

The 24-year-old Scarborough native set the all-time Ivy League record with 4,841 yards and signed with the Colts last year as a free agent. He was drafted in the sixth round of the 2006 CFL draft by the Argos.
