EDMONTON — Veteran Canadian fullback Mike Maurer is coming out of retirement to play for the Edmonton Eskimos.
The CFL team announced the signing of the 33-year-old Regina native on Tuesday.
Maurer spent the last three seasons of his 11-year CFL career with the Eskimos before retiring last May. He was named the Outstanding Canadian in the Eskimos’ 2005 Grey Cup victory.
Maurer has also played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, B.C. Lions and Ottawa Renegades.
NOTES: Nicknamed “The Wolverine,” Maurer has also tried his hand at mixed martial arts during CFL off-seasons. Fighting for the Edmonton-based promotion the Maximum Fighting Championship, Maurer won his MMA debut in March 2006. In his second career fight in February 2007, he was knocked out in 36 seconds by then undefeated fighter Roger Hollett, who later won the MFC’s light-heavyweight belt. Maurer had been planning to compete again for the MFC.
