REGINA — Saskatchewan Roughriders offensive lineman Val St. Germain is calling it quits on a long CFL career.

St. Germain played for five CFL teams in his 14 seasons in the league, capping his career with a Grey Cup victory last year with the Riders.

"I can think of no better way than to end my career as a member of the 2007 Grey Cup winning Saskatchewan Roughriders," St. Germain said in a statement Thursday.

"The past 14 years have truly been good times and I am thankful for the opportunity to have played the game I love for so long. There is no better moment than standing on that sideline, listening to the national anthem, with feelings of pride, determination and camaraderie coursing through you, waiting for kickoff. I will deeply miss this."

St. Germain, 36, was selected by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats with the first overall pick in the 1994 CFL Canadian college draft. Following four seasons with the Ticats, he went on to play for Edmonton, Ottawa, and Winnipeg before his final season in Saskatchewan.

St. Germain was both an East and West Division all-star, and in 2005 was nominated for the CFL’s outstanding Canadian and outstanding lineman awards when he was with the Renegades.

St. Germain is training to be a financial adviser.
