CALGARY — Calgary Stampeders veteran Markus Howell announced his retirement Monday.
The 35-year-old from Winnipeg played receiver, returner and defensive back over his 10 seasons with Calgary, Ottawa and his hometown Bombers. He won a Grey Cup with Calgary in 2008.
"It’s been a long and interesting 10 years," Howell said in a statement released by the Stampeders. "I’m thankful to the Calgary Stampeders organization for allowing me to continue living a dream and win a Grey Cup championship."
Howell played 171 games in the regular season and 13 playoffs games during his four seasons with Calgary, one with Ottawa and five in Winnipeg. The multi-purpose player caught 51 passes for 2,062 yards and nine touchdowns, returned 75 kickoffs for 1,642 yards and one a major and brought 241 punts back for 2,200 yards.
Howell also had 28 tackles, 21 special-teams wrap-ups, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries including one for a major.
He was drafted by Winnipeg in the fourth round (25th overall) in the 2000 CFL Canadian Draft. He signed with Ottawa in 2005 and was picked up by Calgary in the 2006 dispersal draft of the Ottawa Renegades.
