CALGARY — The Calgary Stampeders have signed defensive linemen Lindsey Witten and Torrey Davis.
Witten is a University of Connecticut star who had team-leading 14 tackles and 11.5 in 2009. The 23-year-old from Cleveland signed with the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers last year before joining the United Football League’s Hartford Colonials.
Davis, a 22-year-old from Tampa, Fla., tried out for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and then joined the Arena Football League’s Spokane Shock last year.
He played for the 2008 NCAA champion Florida Gators and made a touchdown-saving goal-line tackle in the BCS championship game. He transferred to Jacksonville State the following season and had 16 tackles, 2.5 sacks and a fumble recovery.
CFL main camps open June 5.
"Training camp is approaching quickly and we’re excited to announce the signing of two additional defensive linemen," Stampeder coach and GM John Hufnagel said in a statement Monday. "I’m looking forward to seeing these guys compete hard at camp."
