Freak injury sidelines Riders fullback

A freak injury has cost the Saskatchewan Roughriders the services of fullback Chris Szarka for the final three regular-season games and possibly the playoffs.

Chris Szarka, who provides blocking for tailback Wes Cates in some formations, partially severed two of the fingers on his left hand while working with a tablesaw on Monday, Regina radio station News Talk 980 is reporting, adding Szarka was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery.

Szarka is not expected to lose the use of the fingers.

Szarka has rushed the ball 25 times this season for 104 yards and has one touchdown and one fumble.

He also has six special teams tackles.

Szarka, who has been with the Riders since he was drafted in 1997, is also one of the favourites among Riders fans.
