For the first time ever, a Grey Cup will be played at BMO Field.
Sources told Sportsnet that the 2016 CFL championship game will be staged at the renovated outdoor stadium in Toronto, and that the league will be holding a joint press conference with city officials on Thursday to make the announcement at a downtown hotel then.
Sportsnet had reported a few weeks back that the 2016 Grey Cup would be held in Toronto and 2017’s in Ottawa. But until recently, a decision had not been made on whether next November’s game would be played indoors at Rogers Centre or outdoors at BMO Field.
The new Toronto Argonauts ownership group was assured of a Grey Cup bid when taking over from David Braley.
Because temporary seating will be installed at Exhibition Place for the Grey Cup at BMO, it is believed that the NHL Winter Classic may very well be held there on Jan. 1, 2017 — helping offset the costs and be more logistically prudent with the two events less than six weeks apart.
The 2017 Winter Classic would fall in line with the Centennial celebrations of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
