Als’ Watkins out remainder of the season

MONTREAL — Kerry Watkins, the Montreal Alouettes’ top receiver, is expected to miss the remainder of the CFL season with a separated shoulder.

Watkins was placed on the nine-game injured list Friday and will likely be out for the remainder of the regular season and playoffs. By being on the list, the rest of Watkins’ salary doesn’t count against the league-mandated cap.

However, should Watkins recover quicker than expected, the Alouettes could bring him back onto their active roster and the rest of his pay would again count against the cap.

Watkins was injured in Montreal’s 44-40 victory last week in Winnipeg.

Entering Friday’s game at Calgary, the seven-year veteran led the team with 51 catches. Watkins also recorded 859 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.

The injury means the two-time league all-star’s five-year streak with 1,000 or more receiving yards will likely end.

The defending Grey Cup champions have an experienced replacement in Brian Bratton and a solid backup in Andrew Hawkins at the receiver position.
