EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — New York Jets defensive co-ordinator Kacy Rodgers is not with the team for its game against the Denver Broncos as he deals with what coach Todd Bowles has called a "serious" illness.

Bowles is expected to call the defensive plays from the sideline Sunday.

Neither Bowles nor the team has provided any details on the illness sidelining the 49-year-old Rodgers. It’s unclear when he might be able to return to work.

Rodgers was scheduled to meet with reporters Thursday for his weekly news conference, but the team said he had a medical appointment and would speak the next day. On Friday, a visibly concerned Bowles announced that Rodgers was sick and not at the facility.

When asked if Rodgers was dealing with something serious, Bowles responded: "He’s a tough guy. It’s a serious thing."
