FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The New York Jets have placed quarterback Trevor Siemian on injured reserve and signed quarterback David Fales.

Siemian injured ligaments in his left ankle during the second quarter of the Jets’ 23-3 loss to Cleveland on Monday night. He’ll need surgery and is out for the season.

Siemian was starting in place of Sam Darnold, who is sidelined at least another game while recovering from mononucleosis.

Luke Falk will start for New York at New England on Sunday. Fales, who has familiarity with coach Adam Gase’s offence, was signed Wednesday to back up Falk.

Fales is in his fifth NFL season, and played under Gase in 2015 with Chicago and the last two years in Miami. He was with Detroit in training camp and waived before this season.

The 28-year-old Fales was a sixth-round pick by the Bears in 2014 out of San Jose State. He has thrown for 287 yards and one touchdown with an interception in three NFL games.
