Veteran tight end Martellus Bennett is hanging up his cleats after 10 seasons in the NFL.
Bennett, who won Super Bowl LI with the New England Patriots, announced his retirement on Twitter Friday night. The 31-year-old said he intends to switch his focus from football to his multimedia production company, The Imagination Agency.
Per the company’s website: “The Imagination Agency is a wondrous group of monsters and imaginary friends tasked with creating, drawing, writing and imaginating fantastical adventures for kids all over the world. We are committed to creating your next great adventure.”
Off the field, Bennett has long been known as one of the most compelling characters in the league, balancing his playing career with more creative career aspirations — he has published a children’s book, given a TED Talk and created an animated short film. He has also been widely known as one of the more socially-conscious players in the NFL and has spoken up about various causes while using his NFL platform for good.
On the field, Bennett has suited up for the Dallas Cowboys (four seasons), New York Giants (one), Chicago Bears (three), Patriots (one and a half) and Green Bay Packers (half a season, before returning to New England). Over the course of 144 career NFL games, he has registered 433 receptions for 4,573 yards and 30 touchdowns.
Bennett was released by the Patriots earlier this month after finishing the 2017 season on injured reserve.
