Draft day is finally here but so much remains unsettled — even after the two big trades.
The top two picks will presumably be quarterbacks but outside of that, there are still so many balls in the air.
Since we’re expecting the 2016 draft to be totally unpredictable, and will likely destroy my mock draft below, why not give my best shot at predicting tonight’s first-round action?
Our mock draft does not include any trades, however, but the picks are based on a combination of the buzz I’m hearing, gut feel, team needs, and the value of the draft prospects.
Here’s our final Round 1 mock draft:
1) Los Angeles Rams: Jared Goff (QB, California)
Goff played his college football in Northern California and heads south to become the franchise QB in Los Angeles.
2) Philadelphia Eagles: Carson Wentz (QB, North Dakota State)
The Eagles land their long-term starter at quarterback but with Sam Bradford and Chase Daniel still on the roster, Philadelphia doesn’t need to rush Wentz into action.
3) San Diego Chargers: Ronnie Stanley (OT, Notre Dame)
Despite Laremy Tunsil and Jalen Ramsey being on the board, there’s been a huge buzz about Stanley, who some teams grade as the top offensive tackle in the draft.
4) Dallas Cowboys: Ezekiel Elliott (RB, Ohio State)
Rather than filling a glaring hole at defensive end with Joey Bosa or going with the consensus top defensive player in Ramsey, the Cowboys can’t resist the temptation of selecting the top running back in the draft.
5) Jacksonville Jaguars: Jalen Ramsey (CB/S, Florida State)
The Jaguars turn in their card rather quickly as they land one of the best defensive players in the draft.
6) Baltimore Ravens: Laremy Tunsil (OT, Ole Miss)
The Ravens haven’t had reliable play at left tackle for the last couple of years so they’re thrilled to pick up Tunsil, who many expected to be the No. 1 overall pick before the Titans traded out.
7) San Francisco 49ers: DeForest Buckner (DE, Oregon)
Chip Kelly grabs a familiar face and picks up the Oregon pass rusher who can start right away on a depleted defence. Expect San Fran to address the QB position later on.
8) Cleveland Browns: Joey Bosa (DE, Ohio State)
The Browns could ultimately trade out of this spot and stockpile more picks but they stay in-state and lock in the Ohio State pass rusher with their first pick.
9) Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Vernon Hargreaves (CB, Florida)
The Bucs have plenty of options here with a few pass rushers on the board, but decide to address their secondary. Hargreaves is a good fit for Mike Smith’s defence.
10) New York Giants: Leonard Floyd (LB, Georgia)
The Giants have been linked to Floyd for quite a while, who offers the most upside of any pass rusher in this draft.
11) Chicago Bears: Shaq Lawson (DE, Clemson)
With Hargreaves off the board, the Bears address their front seven and bring in the versatile edge rusher to pair with last year’s top free-agent signing, Pernell McPhee.
12) New Orleans Saints: Sheldon Rankins (DT, Louisville)
The Saints traditionally prefer bigger players up front, but they desperately need a long-term interior pass rusher so Rankins fills the void.
13) Miami Dolphins: Eli Apple (CB, Ohio State)
The Dolphins could look to move up if Elliott gets past Dallas at No. 4, but in this scenario Miami stays at their spot and selects the top cornerback on their board. Apple has a nice combination of size and strength.
14) Oakland Raiders: Myles Jack (LB, UCLA)
Jack would’ve been a sure top-five pick if not for medical concerns (knee) but the Raiders are willing to take a risk. The UCLA product will add another speed component to an already-improving team.
15) Tennessee Titans: Jack Conklin (OT, Michigan State)
If the tackles start flying off the board, the Titans could look to move back in the top-10 but this scenario works out well as Conklin slips to No. 15 to address their right tackle deficiency.
16) Detroit Lions: Taylor Decker (OT, Ohio State)
The Lions want to address their offensive front and bring in the last of the top-rated offensive tackles. Decker should start at right tackle and will eventually move over to the left side.
17) Atlanta Falcons: Darron Lee (LB, Ohio State)
Dan Quinn loves speed and the Falcons need to get more explosive on defence so Lee is an ideal selection at their spot. He’s one of the best athletes in the draft.
18) Indianapolis Colts: Ryan Kelly (C, Alabama)
The Colts end their recent run of questionable drafting and address their much-maligned offensive line with the top centre in the draft. Kelly is a perfect fit and could be a 10-year starter up the middle for Andrew Luck.
19) Buffalo Bills: Jarran Reed (DT, Alabama)
The Bills need to get better in the front seven, especially after releasing Mario Williams, so Reed pairs up with an Alabama alumnus in Marcell Dareus to provide an elite run defender on the defensive front.
20) New York Jets: Paxton Lynch (QB, Memphis)
The Jets could very well bring in a linebacker here but with the unclear Ryan Fitzpatrick situation still lingering, New York tabs a long-term starter at quarterback. Ideally, Lynch could spend a year or two learning behind a veteran starter.
21) Washington Redskins: Karl Joseph (S, Wake Forest)
Redskins GM Scot McCloughan helped build the Legion of Boom secondary in Seattle and after signing Josh Norman last week, he brings in help with a fiercely competitive safety.
22) Houston Texans: Will Fuller (WR, Notre Dame)
The Texans need to surround new QB Brock Osweiler with more playmakers so they bring in a deep threat to pair with emerging star De’Andre Hopkins.
23) Minnesota Vikings: Josh Doctson (WR, TCU)
Just like the Texans, the Vikings desperately need a weapon in the passing game. Teddy Bridgewater threw only 14 touchdown passes last season and he could use a No. 1 receiver with elite skills with the ball in the air.
24) Cincinnati Bengals: Corey Coleman (WR, Baylor)
The receiver run continues as the Bengals fill a need to make up for the losses of Mohamed Sanu and Marvin Jones in free agency. Coleman has electric playmaking ability and would fit in nicely with A.J. Green and tight end Tyler Eifert.
25) Pittsburgh Steelers: William Jackson (CB, Houston)
The Steelers were a mess in the defensive backfield last season so they go back to their roots and select a physical press corner that would fit in nicely in Pittsburgh.
26) Seattle Seahawks: Vernon Butler (DT, Louisiana Tech)
Seattle keeps mentioning how much they love the depth in this draft so I honestly expect them to move down from this spot but if they stay and the top offensive tackles or Kelly is off the board, then an athletic interior defensive lineman makes plenty of sense here.
27) Green Bay Packers: Reggie Ragland (LB, Alabama)
The Packers have been using Clay Matthews at inside linebacker, which hasn’t been a great fit for his skill set, so picking Ragland helps upgrade two positions as Matthews can shift back outside.
28) Kansas City Chiefs: LaQuon Treadwell (WR, Ole Miss)
The Chiefs have a need in the secondary but Treadwell slips after a slow 40 time and the Chiefs pounce at the opportunity to land the big-bodied receiver. Treadwell is a nice compliment to Jeremy Maclin on the outside.
29) Arizona Cardinals: T.J. Green (DB, Clemson)
The first big surprise as the Cardinals go with the Clemson safety who projects as a cornerback in Arizona’s system. He has the skill set to make the transition.
30) Carolina Panthers: Kevin Dodd (DE, Clemson)
Everyone expects Carolina to take a defensive back after letting go of Norman but the Panthers place a much higher emphasis on their front seven and add a speedy pass rusher to replace the retired Jared Allen.
31) Denver Broncos: Cody Whitehair (OG, Kansas State)
No, the Broncos don’t take a quarterback here as they’re still looking at some veteran options and get better up front with Whitehair, who could play either guard spot or eventually kick inside to centre.
Just missed: S Keanu Neal (Florida), DT A’Shawn Robinson (Alabama), DT Chris Jones (Mississippi State), Robert Nkemdiche (Ole Miss), Noah Spence (Eastern Kentucky), WR Michael Thomas (Ohio State), QB Connor Cook (Michigan State), CB Artie Burns (Miami).
