New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul was hospitalized on Saturday after injuring his hand in a fireworks accident, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported on Sunday.

According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, Pierre-Paul’s fingers are being checked for nerve damage but he appears to have escaped serious injury.

The Giants designated Pierre-Paul as their franchise player in March, but the 26-year-old has yet to sign the $14.8-million tender. If the two sides can’t agree on a long-term deal by the July 15 deadline, the two-time Pro Bowler will be eligible for free agency following the season.

Pierre-Paul started 16 games for the Giants last season, finishing with 53 tackles, 12.5 sacks and three forced fumbles.
