Report: Raiders interview Trestman for coach

Montreal Alouettes head coach Marc Trestman has been interviewed by Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis for the club’s head coaching position according to a newspaper report.

The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that Davis has interviewed head coaches over the last two weeks, including former Giants head coach Jim Fassel, in the event he decides to fire current coach Tom Cable.

At this point, Raiders officials will not comment on whether Cable will return for a second season.

Trestman was the Raiders quarterbacks coach in 2001, and the club’s offensive coordinator in 2002.

“I am not aware of any NFL team asking permission to talk to our head coach,” said Alouettes GM Jim Popp when reached by Sportsnet on Wednesday.

It should be noted however that given the protocol in the NFL for signing players or talking to coaches, it seems unlikely that Trestman would have interviewed for the job, at least officially.

For that to happen, the Raiders would have had to contact the Alouettes owner, Robert Wettenhall and ask permission.

That said, Trestman knows Al Davis well. In spite of their close relationship, Trestman inked a 3 year extension with the Alouettes this off-season.

The 54-year old has coached the Alouettes the last two seasons, making the Grey Cup final both years and winning in 2009.
