Jay Cutler is interested in postponing his broadcast career at Fox as an NFL analyst to be the starting quarterback of the Miami Dolphins, according to Jeff Darlington of ESPN.
Miami’s current starting pivot, Ryan Tannehill, is injured and does not have a clear timetable for a return. With that news coming out of Dolphins camp Thursday, Cutler has reported interest in making a comeback in Miami after retiring from the NFL in May.
“Sources said that Jay Cutler would be willing to delay his broadcast career at Fox to play for Dolphins coach Adam Gase, who helped him revitalize his career when he was the QB’s offensive coordinator with the Bears in 2015,” wrote Darlington. “But Cutler plans to consider such a move only if he gets the chance to be the full-time starter (and get starter money) for the entire season. (Cutler views this as the only practical QB job he’d consider at this point, sources said.)”
The Dolphins also have Matt Moore as their second string QB, but he doesn’t have the same experience as Cutler, who’s held a starting spot for the majority of his 11-year NFL career.
Cutler’s health may also be in question, with him only appearing in five games in 2016 after tearing his labrum in his right shoulder, which required season-ending surgery.
Darlington also writes that Colin Kaepernick has been a name floating around Miami’s front office as possible quarterback insurance.
