New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez has a labral tear in his right shoulder and will likely undergo season-ending surgery, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.

Mortensen said Sanchez and the Jets have yet to confirm whether he’ll undergo surgery or opt to rehab the shoulder in an attempt to return this season, although he would likely still need surgery in the off-season.

Sanchez injured his right shoulder in the fourth quarter of a pre-season game against the New York Giants on Aug. 24. He was likely to be named the team’s starter over rookie Geno Smith before the injury.

New York’s fifth overall pick in 2009, Sanchez has three years left on his contract after this season but with no guaranteed money, giving the Jets a chance to part ways with the QB at no cost.

In 2012, the 26-year-old USC product finished with career lows in completion percentage (54.3), passing yards (2,883), touchdowns (13), interceptions (18) and QB rating (66.9).
