The New York Jets are reportedly preparing to fire head coach Todd Bowles following Sunday’s season finale, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport.
News of the struggling club’s plan to make a coaching change does not come as a surprise. While the Jets began the season with plenty of hope thanks in part to an impressive debut from rookie quarterback Sam Darnold, the team has been unable to string together many wins in what many believed would be a competitive season in New York.
Their record of 4-11 going into Sunday’s division matchup against the New England Patriots has them last in the AFC East and saw them eliminated from playoff contention earlier than most.
Bowles was hired in January 2015 after two seasons as Arizona’s defensive coordinator. A strong first season at the helm saw him guide the Jets to a 10-6 finish, but back-to-back 5-11 campaigns that followed put extra pressure on his ability to turn things around this year. Overall, Bowles has a 24-39 record as the Jets’ head coach.
The Jets will join the Green Bay Packers (Mike McCarthy) and Cleveland Browns (Hue Jackson) as NFL teams with coaching casualties this year.
