The Washington Redskins have relieved president Bruce Allen of his duties and Ron Rivera is reportedly expected to be hired as the team’s head coach, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
“Like our passionate fan base, I recognize we have not lived up to the high standards set by great Redskins teams, coaches and players who have come before us. As we reevaluate our team leadership, culture and process for winning football games, I am excited for the opportunities that lie ahead to renew our singular focus and purpose of bringing championship football back to Washington D.C,” said Redskins owner Dan Snyder in a press release.
Allen was hired as the Redskins’ executive VP and general manager in 2009. He was promoted to team president in 2014.
Washington finished 3-13 this season and hasn’t made the playoff since 2015.
Rivera, meanwhile, was fired by the Carolina Panthers at the beginning of December after leading the team to a 5-7 record. They finished the season 5-11 and missed the playoffs for the third time in the past four years.
Rivera is the Panthers’ all-time winningest head coach. He was hired in 2011 and compiled a 76-63-1 record in the regular season. Rivera helped lead the team to a Super Bowl appearance, an NFC championship and three NFC South titles.
