NFL fans invested in the stock market will be hoping to avoid the heavy losses suffered by many on the heels of the New England Patriots‘ 41-33 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles a year ago at Super Bowl LII.
The day following the Eagles’ stunning upset victory investors took a beating, as the S&P 500 tumbled by 113.19 points, or approximately 4.1 per cent.
However, expectations of a repeat performance at the markets are tempered this year, with the odds of a Patriots Super Bowl victory being followed by a winning day on the S&P 500 on Monday, February 4 set at +200 on the Super Bowl prop bets at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
New England remains favoured by 2.5 points on the Super Bowl odds ahead of Sunday’s meeting with the Los Angeles Rams at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. As a result, successful wagering on a Rams victory being followed by a rise in the S&P 500 will pay out on attractive +270 odds.
Bitcoin is also expected to show an improvement over its performance from a year ago. The price of the popular cryptocurrency dipped dramatically during last year’s big game amid news that banks in the United States and China would refuse to support it. But with the price of Bitcoin remaining relatively stable since November, the odds of Bitcoin increasing in value during Sunday’s contest are pegged at a healthy -130.
Elsewhere on the Super Bowl exotic props, speculation on the future of Rob Gronkowski has fuelled attractive +550 odds that the Patriots’ veteran tight end will announce his retirement from the NFL following Sunday’s game.
Gronkowski has appeared in the Super Bowl on three previous occasions, including the Patriots’ 28-24 win over Seattle in Super Bowl XLIX. The dying seconds of that contest were marked by an on-field brawl, with Gronkowski ending up on the receiving end of a punch in the face from Seahawks linebacker Bruce Irvin, who was subsequently ejected from the game.
Sunday’s contest is expected to be a much more peaceful affair, with the odds of any player being ejected for throwing a punch or fighting listed at a lengthy +700.
Gronkowski also made his presence felt when the Patriots visited the White House following their historic 34-28 win over the Atlanta Falcons two years ago, engaging in highly publicized fist bumps with U.S. President Donald Trump in the Oval Office.
While Trump is set as a +375 long shot to attend Sunday’s game, the winning team sports short -330 odds of eventually visiting the White House, with the odds of the players being served fast food during their visit listed at +210.
