After mounting pressure from sponsors calling for change, the Washington Redskins have announced the organization will undergo a thorough review of the team’s name.

“In light of recent events around our country and feedback from our community, the Washington Redskins are announcing the team will undergo a thorough review of the team’s name,” the team said in via a release. “This review formalizes the initial discussions the team has been having with the league in recent weeks.”

The announcement comes after the title sponsor of the club’s stadium, FedEx, requested Thursday that the team change their name, which is widely acknowledged as a “dictionary-defined racial slur” by experts and advocates.

“This process allows the team to take into account not only the proud tradition and history of the franchise but also input from our alumni, the organization, sponsors, the National Football League and the local community it is proud to represent on and off the field,” said majority owner Dan Snyder via the team’s release.

Following the announcement, ESPN Senior NFL Insider Adam Schefter noted that the initiation of the review process suggests the team’s name will indeed be changed.
