Fan Fuel: Bubba Watson wins thrilling Masters

BY JAMES HUNT – FAN FUEL BLOGGER

Once again the Masters and Augusta National delivered the goods this past weekend and while the final chapter did not include some of the usual suspects, it was truly a storybook finish. Bubba Watson won his first green jacket as the 2012 Masters ended with an extra few holes of playoff golf.

The fun really began, as it normally does, on Saturday afternoon. From Phil Mickelson’s charge on the back nine, to the sympathy hugs shared by Rory and Sergio on the 12th green. Great shots, loud Augusta roars and enough big names near the top of the leaderboard to ensure a fantastic Sunday.

And what a Sunday it was!

The shot of the tournament, and one of the greatest shots in Masters history was delivered by South African Louis Oosthuizen on the par five, second hole.

With the pin tucked in the traditional right hand corner of the green, Oosthuizen hit a perfect four iron from about 240 yards and after hitting the front edge, the ball snaked its way across the green and founds its way into the bottom of the cup for a stunning albatross! For only the fourth time in Masters history a two had been recorded on a par five. To put that into perspective, there were two hole in ones on Sunday alone.

During the memorable final round, many of the top players challenged for the lead including stars like Phil Mickelson, Lee Westwood, and Padraig Harrington, but in the end it came down to long hitting American Bubba Watson and the rock steady Louis Oosthuizen.

The two finished tied after 72 holes and it took two playoff holes and another miracle shot to decide the winner. This time the miracle shot was provided by the eventual winner, Watson.

Deep in the trees on the 10th hole, Bubba had to hit a 40 yard hook with a pitching wedge just to come close to the green and not only did the ball hit the green, incredibly it ended up about 15 feet from the pin. Two putts later and the Green Jacket was Bubba’s.

Later on, in the Butler Cabin they asked Bubba if he ever dreamed of wearing a Green Jacket to which Bubba answered, “I never got this far in my dreams.”

A perfect ending to another fantastic Masters!
