Rory McIlroy will be looking to build on his first win on the PGA Tour since 2019 when he tees off at the PGA Championship later this week as the +1100 betting favourite on the golf futures at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
McIlroy saw an extended drought that dumped him from his previous perch atop the World Golf Rankings finally come to an end with this month’s victory at the Wells Fargo Championship, and he will be gunning for his fifth career major tournament title when the 103rd edition of the PGA Championship gets underway on Thursday morning at Kiawah Island Golf Resort in Kiawah Island, South Carolina.
The 32-year-old native of Northern Ireland saw an epic run cool down considerably following the pause in play last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, McIlroy has steadily regained form since the calendar turned to 2021, following up a fifth-place finish at the Masters with top-ten performances at both the WGC-Workday Championship and the Arnold Palmer Invitational. McIlroy has also enjoyed past success at the PGA Championship, raising the Wanamaker Trophy in both 2012 and 2014. However, he has cracked the top ten in just one of his past six appearances at the event.
Despite his recent struggles to maintain consistency, Bryson DeChambeau sits second to McIlroy on the PGA Championship odds at online sports betting sites, knotted with Jon Rahm, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas at +1400, while Dustin Johnson lags at +1800 odds.
DeChambeau enjoyed a torrid start to the current campaign, earning his first career major tournament win at last fall’s U.S. Open, and notching his second win of the year at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The big-hitting American has failed to crack the top 40 in three of his past four outings, but he’ll be looking to build on his fourth-place performance at last year’s PGA Championship.
Spieth has finished among the top three at the PGA Championship on two previous occasions and has shown flashes of his previous major tournament-winning form with seven top-fifteen performances in his past eight outings, including a victory on home turf at the Valero Texas Open.
Conversely, it has been all downhill for Johnson since he claimed his first career green jacket at last year’s Masters. Johnson remains perched as the world’s top-ranked golfer despite enduring a dismal run that has featured just one top-ten finish in his past eight outings.
Further down the PGA Championship odds, defending champion Collin Morikawa sits just off the pace, joining Daniel Berger at +2800. Reigning Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama lags at +4000 odds for this week, while Corey Conners leads all Canadians as a +5000 wager.
