Following his victory at The Northern Trust and his return to the top of the rankings, Dustin Johnson will be looking to make it two wins in a row when he tees off at the BMW Championship this week as the +800 betting favourite at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
Johnson put on a dazzling display last weekend at The Northern Trust, finishing the tournament at minus-30, and seizing the lead in the FedExCup standings going into the 2020 BMW Championship this weekend at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Illinois.
The 36-year-old’s impressive performance to kick off the FedExCup playoffs came on the heels of his second-place finish at the PGA Championship three weeks ago. Johnson’s game has steadied after struggling with consistency earlier in the season. While he came away with the win at the Travelers Championship in late June, Johnson also missed the cut on two occasions before turning things around at the first major tournament of the season.
While Johnson joins Tiger Woods as the only golfers to claim multiple career wins at the BMW Championship, he has struggled at this event since his last victory in 2016. Johnson has finished no higher than 24th in his past three appearances, capped by a disappointing 57th-place performance a year ago.
Jon Rahm closely trails Johnson as the +1000 second favourite on the BMW Championship odds at online betting sites, followed by Bryson DeChambeau, who joins Justin Thomas at +1200. Rory McIlroy sits alongside Xander Schauffele at +1600, while Daniel Berger is knotted with Webb Simpson at +2000.
Rahm’s roller coaster campaign continued with his sixth-place finish last weekend. The 25-year-old Spaniard now has six top-ten finishes this season, but has also finished 27th or worse in five of eight outings since the PGA Tour resumed in June.
DeChambeau remains among the favourites on the golf odds despite missing the cut for the second time in four outings last weekend. And it has also been feast or famine for Thomas. The defending champion at this event, Thomas has been a non-factor in two outings since his victory at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.
McIlroy’s struggles also continued at The Northern Trust, where he turned in a season-worst 65th-place finish. However, McIlroy has enjoyed success at the BMW Championship, claiming victory at this event back in 2012.
Berger enters the second weekend of the FedExCup playoffs as an intriguing option, as he impressed while finishing third at The Northern Trust. However, Berger still has plenty to prove after discovering he will not be invited to the Masters despite finishing among the top five in six of his past eight outings.
