Justin Thomas will be aiming to close out 2020 on a winning note when he tees off on Thursday at the Mayakoba Golf Classic as a strong +500 favourite on the betting lines at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
Thomas is coming off a respectable fourth-place performance at the Masters, and has finished among the top ten in four of five tournament appearances going into Thursday morning's opening round of the 2020 Mayakoba Golf Classic at the El Camaleon Golf Club in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.
Currently at No. 3 in the World Golf Rankings, Thomas has recorded two wins since the start of 2020. He has also shot at least one round of 66 or better in each of his four tournament appearances so far this season. However, Thomas struggled at his lone previous appearance at the only PGA Tour tournament in Mexico, finishing a distant 23rd at this event back in 2014.
Thomas leads what is arguably the deepest field in the 13-year history of this tournament. Brooks Koepka sits second to Thomas as a +1000 wager to win the tournament at online sports betting sites. Harris English follows at +1600, just ahead of Mexico's Abraham Ancer, who joins Daniel Berger and Tony Finau at +1800.
Koepka has been plagued by nagging knee and hip injuries this year that have hampered his performance. The four-time major tournament winner missed the cut in five of 13 Tour appearances last season, which ended prior to the FedExCup playoffs. However, Koepka has shown signs of turning things around early in the new campaign, posting top-ten finishes in his past two outings, capped by a run to seventh place at the Masters.
All eyes will be on Ancer at this weekend's tournament. The pride of Reynosa, Mexico turned heads with a stellar performance at the Masters before falling back to 13th during the final round, and has shown steady improvement over his five previous appearances at this event, finishing ninth or better in two of the past three years.
Berger arrives in Mexico with a lot to prove after being denied a berth in this year's Masters despite embarking on a torrid run that has lifted him to No. 13 in the World Golf Rankings. The 27-year-old cracked the top ten in seven of his first nine outings of 2020, but has finished in the top 20 just twice in his past five Tour appearances.
Other notables on the Mayakoba Golf Classic odds for this week include Rickie Fowler, who sits off the pace at +2500, and Canadian Corey Conners, who is listed at +3000, while defending tournament champion Brendon Todd trails at a lengthy +5000.
