Justin Thomas will be looking to build on his victory two weeks ago at the Players Championship when he tees off at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play tournament later this week as a +1200 co-favourite at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
Thomas’ victory at the Players Championship represented a big turnaround following a pair of shaky outings, and marked his fifth top-ten finish of the season going into Wednesday’s group stage action at the Match Play event at Austin Country Club in Austin, Texas.
Thomas is set to face a trio of struggling veterans during the group stage of the event. Kevin Kisner and Matt Kuchar finished one-two at this event two years ago. However, they both missed the cut at the Players Championship, have combined to produce just one top-ten finish this season, and sit well back of the favourites on the odds board at +5000 and +12500 at online betting sites. Louis Oosthuizen has turned in moderately better results, posting a pair of top-six finishes this season, but also sits off the pace as a +4000 wager.
Thomas has company atop the WGC-Match Play odds, where he is joined by Bryson DeChambeau as a +1200 co-favourite, ahead of Dustin Johnson and Jon Rahm at +1400.
DeChambeau was forced to settle for a share of third place at the Players Championship after storming to an impressive win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational earlier this month, and has now finished in the top ten in five of eight outings this season. The hard-hitting 27-year-old turned in a disappointing 40th-place finish at this event two years ago, and will be aiming to overcome the disappointing final round performance he turned in two weeks ago at Bay Hill.
The winner at this event in 2017, Johnson returns to action looking to rediscover his form after brutal outings at the WGC-Workday Championship and the Players Championship, where he finished 54th and 48th, respectively. Despite those struggles, Johnson remains atop the World Golf Rankings heading into this week’s tournament.
Rahm marched to a second-place finish as a No. 21 seed at this event in 2017, eventually falling to Johnson in the final. This time around, Rahm opens the tournament trailing only Johnson and Thomas as the No. 3 seed, and will be aiming to take the next step after finishing inside the top ten in six of his past eight outings.
Further down the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play odds, Collin Morikawa joins Rory McIlroy at +2000, while Corey Connors leads all Canadians in the field as a +6600 wager.
