TGL, the Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy co-founded tech-infused golf league, is starting a women’s league later this year.
The LPGA and TMRW Sports, the parent company of TGL, announced the formation of WTGL on Tuesday, dubbed a “new platform for team golf featuring the world’s best women golfers.”
WTGL, which is set to launch in winter 2026-27 after the upcoming LPGA Tour season, will feature teams of LPGA Tour stars competing in the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
“I’ve seen how new formats can engage audiences while showcasing both athlete personality and performance, and WTGL brings that spirit of innovation to the women’s game,” said LPGA Tour commissioner Craig Kessler in a statement. “It creates another global stage for our athletes — one that helps fans connect more deeply with them and continues to elevate the visibility and growth of women’s golf.”
WTGL is set to build upon the foundation of TGL and is set to be a showcase for the skill, personalities, and team spirit of the participating LPGA Tour stars.
“In partnership with the LPGA, WTGL is another step in creating a modern, media-focused version of a centuries-old game that appeals to today’s sports fan,” said Mike McCarley, founder and CEO of TMRW Sports, in a statement. “Now, along with the LPGA and its athletes, we look forward to creating a stage to help showcase the stars of the LPGA.
“WTGL’s short-form, team-golf format will engage new audiences and complement the LPGA Tour’s global appeal.”
Teams are set to compete in a regulation season and playoffs and McCarley told Sports Business Journal that conversations with prospective ownership groups and commercial partners are already underway, while where the matches will air remains to be determined.
Franchises will have the same city or region base like TGL teams.
The LPGA Tour just celebrated its 75th anniversary. Tuesday’s announcement did not mention any players specifically, but the intersection of star players and star personalities is where the WTGL will thrive.
It would not be surprising to see the game’s top players, including Canada’s Brooke Henderson, show interest in its involvement.
The second season of TGL is underway, with Atlanta Drive GC capturing the inaugural SoFi Cup.
