The FedEx Cup playoffs get underway this week, with Bryson DeChambeau leading the way as the favourite on the odds to win The Northern Trust at +1200 at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
DeChambeau continued what has been a steady performance this season with a fourth-place finish in his last outing at the PGA Championship, and sits fourth in the FedEx Cup standings heading into the opening round of The Northern Trust on Thursday morning at TPC Boston.
With his strong finish at his first major tournament of the year, DeChambeau now has eight top-five finishes to his credit this season, including a win at last month’s Rocket Mortgage Classic. The 26-year-old has also enjoyed success at this tournament, earning the win in 2018. In addition, he tallied a two-stroke victory over second-place Justin Rose in his last visit to TPC Boston at the Dell Technologies Championship two years ago.
The current leader atop the FedEx Cup standings, Justin Thomas, closely trails DeChambeau on the odds, joining Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy at +1400 at online betting sites. A two-time winner at this event, Dustin Johnson follows at +2000, while Collin Morikawa comes off his PGA Championship victory sitting alongside Jason Day and Xander Schauffele at +2200 on the golf odds for this week.
Thomas has been at or near the top of the FedEx Cup standings for most of this season, and has posted three wins, with his most recent victory coming earlier this month at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. And like DeChambeau, Thomas has also tasted victory at TPC Boston with a win at the 2017 Dell Technologies Championship. However, the 2017 PGA Championship winner has work to do after stumbling to 37th place at this year’s first major.
Thomas’ shaky performance at the PGA Championship allowed Rahm to overtake him and reclaim top spot on the World Golf Rankings. However, Rahm has produced mixed results in recent outings, with his victory at the Memorial Tournament marking his lone top-10 finish since the PGA Tour resumed in mid-June.
McIlroy has also failed to regain his form since the season resumed, cracking the top 20 just once in six outings and turning in a disappointing 33rd-place performance at the PGA Championship. That comes in sharp contrast to his play before the pause, when he finished among the top ten in 12 of 14 tour appearances including a pair of victories. However, McIlroy has a pair of career wins at TPC Boston to his credit, and finished sixth at last year’s edition of this event on his way to winning his second career FedEx Cup title.
