Ochoa, Kerr join Cdn. Open field

CALGARY — The final field for the US$2.75-million Canadian Women’s Open, which includes the top 50 players on the LPGA money list, was announced Wednesday.

Defending champion Katherine Hull, world No. 1 Lorena Ochoa and current LPGA money leader Cristie Kerr are set to compete at Canada’s national women’s championship taking place Aug. 31 – Sept. 6 at Priddis Greens Golf and Country Club in Calgary.

The field also includes fellow LPGA stars Paula Creamer, Morgan Pressel, Christina Kim, Se Ri Pak, Natalie Gulbis, Karrie Webb, as well as Michelle Wie, who’s making her third consecutive appearance at the event and first as an official member of the LPGA Tour.

Canadians among the field include LPGA Tour players Lorie Kane of Charlottetown and Hamilton’s Alena Sharp, who along with 11 others are hoping to become the first Canadian to win on home soil since Jocelyne Bourassa’s victory in 1973 at La Canadienne Golf Championship.

Other Canadians in the field include A.J. Eathorne of Penticton, B.C., CPGA Women’s champion Jessica Shepley of Oakville, Ont., and Ashley Sholer of Hamilton who earned an exemption through the Canadian Women’s Tour.

Four spots into the Canadian Women’s Open are still up for grabs with the Monday Open qualifier scheduled for Monday, Aug. 31 at the Calgary Elks Golf and Country Club.
