CAMBRIDGE, Ont. — American Brittany Lang and Spain’s Azahara Munoz were the clubhouse leaders early Thursday afternoon after completing the first round of play at the LPGA Manulife Classic.
Lang and Munoz both shot a 5-under 67 at Whistle Bear Golf Club.
"I’m very happy," said Lang, who won the tournament in 2012 and was in contention last year. "I had a lot of just great putting, a lot of aggressive swings, and I’m going to just run those through my mind, the positives, and I’m ecstatic for the next few days."
There was a seven-way tie for third in the clubhouse, including the group of American Brittany Lincicome, Germany’s Caroline Masson and Japan’s Ai Miyazoto, who all shot 4-under 68.
"I didn’t know that we all shot 68 today until I just got done," said Lincicome moments after stepping off the 18th green. "And every hole that I made a birdie, I feel like we all three made birdies on the same holes. Like four times today we all made birdie on the same hole, which is really different.
"That normally doesn’t happen. So it was nice to kind of feed off each other and make a few putts."
Among Canadians, Vivian Tsui of Markham, Ont., was at 2 over, while Samantha Richdale of Kelowna, B.C., shot 3 over.
Canadian Olympians Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont., and Alena Sharp of Hamilton teed off in the afternoon session just as Lang and Munoz signed their scorecards.
