With Tiger Woods back on the course at the Hero World Challenge and shooting low rounds, there is a sense of excitement across the golf world due to the former world No. 1’s return.

However, there have been false dawns involving Woods in the past. Three back surgeries kept him out for the better part of three years. Additionally, he has seldom completed a tournament due to injury, which is why many are waiting to see what he does in a major.

“Wake me up in 124 days when we’re talking about Augusta,” said Donnovan Bennett on the Sportsnet Hot Stove. “Because for me, why Tiger is different, is because the only thing that mattered was The Masters, that he was chasing the all-time record, those other tournaments were just to get him ready for the big tournament. So I don’t care what Tiger does in the Hero Challenge, or a Pro-Am before that.

Reasons to be optimistic about Tiger Woods?

“Unless he has that mystique, Tiger is not Tiger, so he’s not back. To me, what Tiger Woods means, is that on the biggest of stages, it’s a show. You’ve got a pool, you’re picking Tiger in one box or the field. Where are you going with it? He’s a show-stopper because those big tournaments were bigger because he was there. This is not a big tournament.”

Woods is currently tied for fifth at seven-under at the Hero World Challenge, five shots back of the leader Charley Hoffman.
